Tarot Fantasy Devil Card

The Devil challenges us and can be an indicator of feeling trapped. He tests humanity and can dominate the weak minded, enslaving them if they do not have the heart to resist temptation. This said, he also provides a sense of duality between light and dark, dares us to loosen our bonds, think for ourselves, and question absolute authority.

The root word “Devi” is an ancient Sanskrit one, meaning “of divine nature.” The Devil is a complicated entity, embodying various aspects, and is known by many names. One of these is Lucifer, a fallen angel who was once very fair, cast down from heaven for going against the will of the creator and his plan. However, he is also known as a herald of the dawn, the morning star, and a bringer of light and knowledge to mankind. In this way he and his host of fallen angels/demons gift and teach humankind, but also seduce us into living overly indulgent material lives of luxury and lust.

The Devil is heavily related to the satyr Pan, the dragon Draco, Death, and the horned goat god Baphomet. To the early nature worshipping pagans he was not necessarily viewed as evil. He was a lord of the earth and its treasures, and associated with Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and merry making. The contrast is that the Devil will dominate corrupt spirits who give in to greed, fear and hate.
